SD700 Series Fully EMC Compliant with UNSCREENED motor cables – the first VSD in the world to do so
One of the key topics discussed at our recently held Technical Seminars was EMC compliance. A huge amount of interest was generated when it was revealed that the SD700 series of variable speed drives can meet the EN 61800-3: 1996 and EN 61800- 3/A11: 2002 EMC regulations whilst using up to 300M of unscreened cable on the VSD output.
The unique hardware architecture of the SD700 permits this to be done. Installation in this manner cannot guarantee standards conformance when using any other brand of VSD currently available. Whilst compliance to these regulations can be self certified, Power Electronics have engaged an independent specialist electrical test laboratory, Insituto de Technologia Electrica, to verify their results.
A copy of the test reports and further details on installation requirements are available on request.
SD700 Range Complete
The recent release of frame one and frame two sizes in the high performance SD700 series has seen the standard product range completed. Frame one consists of models from 2.2kW to 11kW and frame two 15kW to 22kW.
These two new frame sizes share the same advanced technology as the larger models, incorporating features such as integral harmonic filters, dv/dt filters, RFI filtering and come in either IP20 or IP54 formats. A 125% re-rating applies when utilising the SD700 series for variable torque loads such as centrifugal pumps or fans and screw compressors.
Frame one and two also benefit from ground breaking new technology that permits the use of up to 300m of unscreened motor cables whilst meeting all relative EMC standards.
Successful Seminar Series
The recent series of nationwide seminars hosted by Drive Dynamics have proven to be a huge success with more than 300 participants attending. The seminars, aimed to highlight some of the issues relating to modern variable speed drives, were presented by the Power Electronics Technical Director, Mr Lalo Salvo.
"The information presented at the seminars was designed to be generic. Issues such as EMC, harmonics, dv/dt, environmental design are by-products of all VSDs and are all managed by different manufacturers in varying ways and to different levels. We wanted to help educate the customers to make an informed decision on what product was most suitable for their requirements as some manufacturers are not forthcoming with how their products perform in these areas," commented Lalo. "This was also a great opportunity for me to take feedback from New Zealand customers directly back to the factory."
A series of follow up seminars will be conducted in the regions for those that could not attend in the main centres. If you would like details about a seminar in your region then please feel free to call us. A soft copy of the information presented at the seminars is available. Contact us for further information.
SD700 VSD Range Continues to expand
Following the successful release of the high power/high performance SD700 variable speed drives the range has yet again been expanded. The SD700 has previously been available from 55kW to 2MW. The addition of a new frame size, Frame Three, now extends the SD700 range from 30kW to 2MW. (Photo, right)
Frame Three includes all models from 30kW to 55kW. Whilst offering a compact physical size these models continue to incorporate integral harmonic mitigation and dv/dt filtering in keeping with the SD700 specification. These models also afford a full 125% re-rating for fan or centrifugal pump applications.
All models of the SD700 are available in IP20 and IP54 variants. Development and testing of the low power SD700 models, 0.37kW to 22kW, is well underway and a two tiered release for these models is scheduled for early/mid 2008. Continue to watch this space for further developments
Richard Scrivener joins Drive Dynamics
Drive Dynamics’ rapidly growing dominance in the NZ AC motor controls market has required further growth within the company. To realise this demand and growth Drive Dynamics have appointed Richard Scrivener in the position of Manager – Sales. Richard brings increased knowledge to the team as arguably the most experienced sales person in this field in NZ.
Richard has more than 23 years experience in AC motor controls having held a number of senior management roles in PDL Electronics ranging from sales, marketing and export market development. He has a vast knowledge of all industry sectors with particular expertise in the dairy industry. Following the acquisition of PDL by Schneider Electric, he transferred to Schneider, where his principal role was Fonterra Global Account Manager.
Australian Operation up and running
In response to growing demand from Australian VSD users Drive Dynamics have opened an Australian operation, starting with offices in Brisbane and Adelaide. The operation is a joint venture with our Spanish supplier, Power Electronics, and will trade as Power Electronics Pty ltd.
Nigel Smith has accepted the position as Manager, based in Brisbane. Originally hailing from PDL Electronics’ Napier office where he held the position of Senior Applications Engineer, he joins Power Electronics Australia from a local ABB drives distributor. Nigel brings a great deal of commercial and engineering experience to this new operation.
Many sites in Australia have been looking for a suitable VSD to replace their aging PDL Electronics equipment. With many of these sites being remote and operating in the most rugged of industrial environments integral IP54, reliable operation in high ambient temperatures, and ease of use and serviceability are paramount. The Power Electronics range of VSDs and Soft Starters has proven to be the perfect solution.
Several of Australia’s largest mining companies have now standardised on the Power Electronics range of AC motor control equipment with one site already having installed in excess of 1MW of SD700 VSDs.
Northern Region Branch Opens 1 August 2006
With Drive Dynamics fast becoming the preferred drive and soft starter supplier to many NZ businesses, it has become necessary to open an Auckland based Northern Region branch. The opening of this new branch allows Drive Dynamics to support a rapidly growing northern customer base.
Drive Dynamics has appointed Jeremy Insull to the position of Northern Region Manager. Jeremy possesses a broad electrical engineering knowledge gained from many years in the automation field. His drive knowledge was gained as an application engineer for PDL Electronics. Jeremy has extensive experience in power quality and the application of inverter based systems within this area. Most recently Jeremy held the position of Auckland Sales Manager for Vectek Electronics.

Central North Island branch opens 1 September 2005
Drive Dynamics' continued success in the New Zealand AC motor control market has resulted in yet further expansions by the company. An exclusive focus on variable speed drives and soft starters has seen the company rapidly become the preferred supplier of this equipment to many industrial sectors. As a result of this demand, the first North Island branch has been opened in Napier to service growing demand in the central region.
Drive Dynamics has appointed Andy Buckley to the position of Central Region Manager. Andy has vast experience in all aspects of motor control, gained from years of specialist engineering in this field. He was a senior applications engineer for PDL Electronics, and was electrical engineer for UK company BICC Cables. More recently he has held the position of project engineer for an electrical contractor within the Hawkes Bay.
